Indian Woodblock Printing and Carving Classes
Indie fabric is a teaching studio that offers high quality Indian block printing lessons and experimental surface treatment classes.
We are revolutionizing our own heritage.
We are at the intersection of honoring tradition while democratizing access.
We are built of memory and identify and story of our maker, Trisha Gupta, who started as a western woodblock artist and trained to become and Indian woodblock artists, after visiting her mother’s ancient Haveli.
Her human chain of memory and link to her heritage through art making sustains identity across oceans and generations. Our school is about connecting master and apprentices and sustaining a way of life and a technique that is dwindling alarmingly fast.
Between preservation and revolution, we teach makers and artists, inviting people to become part of something that masters time.
Printmaking is a centuries old medium and Indian woodblock carving, uses natural dyes, and employs artisans. This artform has been threatened by fast fashion, screen print knockoffs, and a decline in natural dyes. Despite its popularity artisans have been dwindling alarmingly fast. As a master printer, and an apprentice to an Indian block printer, I have spent the last ten years devising curriculum and teaching this art work.
